MUG SHOT #1 - LIZ AND QUINN

I want to post the beginning of a weekly tradition for the Warhorse Filmmakers: THE MUG SHOT!
On my trip back to NYC I found a Canon Lens Mug (24-105mm) which I purchased for the class and presented to Liz and Quinn for going beyond and above the call of duty and taking care of things when I was gone.
At the end of this week, Liz and Quinn will present the mug to student they feel stepped up the most this week.
Great work Liz and Quinn! I can’t wait to see who gets it next!
If you like what we’re doing, please take a minute to support and pass around our kickstarter. Every dollar goes to make this a better experience for the students.

Quinn’s Guide to ISO, F-Stop and Shutter Speed for Dummies

I got an interesting e-mail from Quinn tonight. It read:
“I made this for some of the the students that didn’t understand Trey’s lesson on Saturday, or for those who missed it.”
Attached was a powerpoint presentation about the differences between ISO, F-Stop and Shutter Speed.
When I asked him about it he told me that through the process of making this document it helped to clarify the terms for him. I just want to take a moment to applaud Quinn for not only going the extra mile to help himself understand the topics but also to create a document that can and will benefit the entire team.
By looking through it’s clear that Quinn not only listened to Trey’s presentation and took notes but also did research on his own to make things even easier to understand.
I cannot say enough how impressed and proud I am of Quinn. This is a great guide and I’m very happy to share it with the world.
If you’d like to download a pdf of Quinn’s guide you can get it from our dropbox.

A Taste of Success and Giving Back
This has been a project I’ve dreamed of doing everyday since leaving Owen High School last May after shooting the 200th episode of MTV’s MADE. It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever felt like I had to do something no matter what it took.
When I was younger my grandfather used to tell me that when you raise kids you should give them a taste of the “good life” but make sure they have to earn it themselves when they become adults. When I was 17 I was lucky enough to be picked by MTV to appear on and create a reunion special for the first season of MADE. I got to travel around the country for six weeks with my first (and likely the most influential) mentor, Francis Lyons, who now runs the show for MTV. That experience gave me a taste of what it would be like to be successful and I worked hard every day after to try to get back there. At the time my dream of dreams was to produce an episode of MADEall by my self and make everyone at MTV who took the time to teach me proud. My career took a lot of interesting turns over the next few years but when I started working with Francis again and was offered the 200th Episode at Owen, I couldn’t help thinking that if I went back in time 8 years it would have been the most exciting news I could have ever told myself.
I’ve always had a lot of great mentors these last few years and if I can have even half the impact on my students over the next few months then no matter what attention we get or how good the movie is, this class will be a success. The bar Liz and Trey have already set is so high and by the time we start shooting our feature in March my kids are going to be the crew I’ve always dreamed of having.
My teaching attitude is very simple, the more they put in, the more they get out. My recent film Undercity has become a bit of a viral hit and has gotten me a lot of attention. We’ve been written up every where from the NY Times to CNN to TV appearances. It’s also gotten me a chance to sign as a commercial director with Crossroads Films, a company I’ve always been a fan of. A few years ago (or even a few months ago) I never expected to be on a roster with Mark Pellington or any of their other big names. Hopefully by experiencing my recent success along side me, the students in my class will be even hungrier to work hard and see where this oppurtunity can take them.
We have not only a great class of students but also an amazing team of people working with me to make this happen. From the administrators and teachers at Owen High School to my crew coming down from NY, I know that for all of us this will be a once in a lifetime experience.

SAD DAY
Hey internets. I’m sad to say that Frank, my trusy M6, had to be sent in for service day after a rough run in with a wave at coney island last Thursday. Luckily he made it through 10 rolls on the shoot (fun album cover photos) before getting hit.
I didn’t realize the bond we had till I had to send him off. Been in a photo funk since, hopefully can get back on the horse with my canonet next week when I return to NC this week.
